Horizontal sub-menu display [instead of dropdown]

i have a page menu bar with only 4 items in it. only the 4th item has submenu items associated with it

http://wearesalty.com/wordpress/

i don't like the vertically stacked dropdown menu for this site. i can think of three different ways to solve this but don't know how to make any of them happen. any ideas?

1. the dropdown submenu for the fourth item in the page menu bar could cause a second horizontal array of submenu items to appear just below the main navigation bar
(like the one that appears if you roll over 'join us' in the main menu on this page http://www.seiu775.org/)

2. rolling over the 'weddings' item in the main menu could cause other items to appear in the main page menu bar to the right of the 'weddings' item -- by somehow setting a condition for those menu items to be visible or invisible.

or

3. a second page menu bar, separate from the main page menu bar, could be loaded with the list of pages that i want to appear when 'weddings' is rolled over, and made to be visible only on rollover of that item. which i guess would look pretty much the same as option 1, but in this case they would technically be other top-level pages that would just appear in a separate menu bar.

if anybody knows how to make any of these ideas work, please let me know.

thanks

i've had a request for this today too. maybe there is a plugin that will do it? i'd rather do it from within atahualpa if i can.

i've been asked to create horizontal submenus like the ones on their parent site: http://unity.org

any help would be much appreciated! the current atahualpa site looks like this

what about a widget in the header with a separate custom sub menu for each main page link? thoughts?

well.. that kind of worked : http://www.unityhamilton.com/unity2010/new/history/ .. it's just text links though. would be nicer if they were actual menu links, with the pretty squares around them :)

How did you do this??? especially, how did you populate the widget area to dynamically change its content based on which page was clicked in page bar?? Could you please explain it with some details, I'm trying to create a submenu bar too, would love to try your way, you actually got it working! so cool...

i did it in a fairly clunky fashion, but it does work!

i'm using a plugin called dynamic widgets which allows you to control which widgets appear on which pages. then i created a new widget in the header area, and put in a very simple text menu for the three or four sub headings for each page. a different widget for each main page heading.. and bob's your uncle :)

if you come up with a way to have an actual square-y menu like the main page menu bar, please do let me know!
