Trouble with centering header area - page & category menus

I've dealt with the issues people have reported on the dashed border but seem to have another problem. Here's my situation with both the page menu bar and the category menu bar:

I have a background color for the bar that is different than the overall page background. When the content of either bar is left or right justified the bar displays the entire width of the page (as desired). However, when I try to center either bar (%page-center or %cat-center) the background of the bar behind text is correct but to the left and right of the text (blank space) the color is the standard page background.

If that makes sense to someone, can you help me figure out a solution or tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks. :)

the <UL> of the menu bar is wrapped into a div#menu1. The UL is only as wide as the menu tabs require, the div spans the whole layout width. To get a bar effect put the background color on the div

CSS Insert

div#menu1 {
background: #123456;
}

Awesome. Thanks. BTW, I love this theme. You've done a great job and your support of it is wonderful!! :)
