Hody, www.walfisch-freiburg.de takes 2-3 seconds to load. Your other site, tribe-online.de comes up partially in a couple of seconds but took about 10-15 seconds to load completely, with the graphic in the right sidebar.

One thing I would do is to go to ATO/Configure CSS and JS (at the very bottom) and make both files External, so "Yes" to both. It may help load fractionally faster, but it also cleans up your code. I tried to look at your graphics to see if they were optimized properly, which could be another reason for the slow load, but you have some javascript or something that prevents me from looking at them

If your graphic is, for instance, 250px x 150px, make sure your original graphic is that size, too. Do not use a 500px x 300px graphic and scale it down to something smaller.

As for the look of the tribe-online.de, yes it does look rather "Industrial," however, I am not your demographic and besides, it is a matter of personal taste. Why don't you ask your customers/viewers if they like it?

[note: making the CSS and JS external will not save any time for the first page load and will actually add a fraction of load time because a nother reqest is sent to the server. It will save time in viewing other pages since the CSS and JS will be in memory and each page will be smaller when loaded - JD]

Hody May 5, 2012 03:11 PM

Thanks again, just changed that option (was set to internal and twice to yes) and disabled the script that prevents you from looking at code and stuff, try again pls.

SharonJ May 5, 2012 03:31 PM

This time, I had a timer. It took 32 seconds for the right hand graphic to load. What took a lot of time was google analytics, though I do not know why.

your 180 x 180 logo is 50k. It should be about 9 or 10k maximum. It only has 2 colours

TRENDnet Powerline Adapter TPL-405E / TPL-402E is about 9k so that is ok. The links take forever if i click the image. Why not take the link off the graphic and leave the link on "weiterlesen…"

Then again, this might just be my computer. I would ask some of your friends to test this for you, do not just take my word for it.

juggledad May 5, 2012 03:44 PM

there are some options and extensions in FireFox you can use to see how long each piece of the page takes to load.

The page took 1m 44s to load for me

Hody May 5, 2012 04:02 PM

Yepp, just skaled the logo and the rememberance picture of my friend in the footer down, having the impression it loads a tiny bit faster...

lmilesw May 5, 2012 06:17 PM

I would try a test somtime when there is low activity and set the sidebar to not display to see how fast the page loads. I get the impression that all that code in the sidebar may be slowing things down.

On your map page, your map is very slow to load because it is over 600K and

1,024px × 972px (scaled to 493px × 468px) Tut tut tut!

You want to resize your map to 493 x 468. There are probably still lots of people on dial-up who will not want to wait until it downloads in slow increments.

Also your team photos are pretty fuzzy. Any way of sharpening them up?

It's always great to get good constructive feedback. Thanks!

Just happy that as a true blood Missouri transplant to Californian, California has a great implementation of everyone's favorite theme

Very nice, very corporate and responsible looking. My only comment would be to change the default favicon to something blue to match the colours of the rest of your site. Lose the green default star thingy.

Hello Doop,

I liked your website very much. I had a quick look with FF element inspector. Would you mind telling us how you positioned the div.character (katieross.png) on top of the page?

I'm sorry but I'm very new at Atahualpa.

Your help will be much appreciated

Amadeus Jun 4, 2012 06:50 AM

Hello everyone,

(I posted this before but somehow it got lost?)

Here's my attempt with Atahualpa.

http://play.bugs3.com/

The site is not finished as you can see. The brief was to make a photographer's site clean and minimalist. I think I'm getting there. Shame the nice shadows around the container don't show in any IE version; FF, Opera and Chrome are fine. I might have to use graphics like other sites have done.

Two things I'm still struggling with is aligning the menu with the logo (align-bottom) and making the menu reflects the active page.

I'm still looking on this forum but haven't found the solution yet.

I'd appreciate your comments.

A big thank you to the creators of Atahualpa and the support team.

juggledad Jun 4, 2012 06:58 AM

Amadeus - nice clean site.

use the firebug extension of firefox to play with the menu. Try setting the position relative and adjust the 'top' position - you will probably need to make the background transparent too.

cikatomo Jun 6, 2012 01:25 PM

Wouldn't be nice if you share the style.txt? :D

Hi Amadeus. In your photo gallery, I have a heck of a time getting out of it. I use Firefox. I do not see an X anywhere to escape, so I end up clicking all over the screen to escape it and finally it goes away.

I know you are not finished yet, but your galleries should be named something like "people and animals" and "Historic Architecture" or something to make it searchable.

Very clean looking, for sure.

Hi Sharon,

I'm using NextGEN Gallery with the default settings. Clicking on the picture gets you out of the gallery view. I will put a message to do so. At the moment the pictures are all stock photos. I will of course rename the galleries to whatever the pictures are about.

I appreciate your comments, thank you very much.

Hi Juggledad,

Thank you for your comments. I'll get firebug and play about with it.

Hi All

I have only just spotted this thread! Here are 3 recent sites I have completed using Atahualpa. For me this theme is by far the best I have ever come across and with all the options it offers I can't think of a reason to use any other. All I can say is thanks to all for putting this together. The other great thing is the rapid response to any help requests and invariably a simple solution into the bargain.

I switched over to Atahualpa yesterday. I'm thrilled with how customizable it is, as I wanted to make my blog consistent with my Zenfolio hosted photo gallery site. Using Atahualpa is as close as I've come. I'm also a sucker for rotating headers and/or home page slideshows. Yes, Zenfolio now offers a blog function, but I want to keep my Wordpress blog for a number of reasons. I'm also pleased with how easily customization is achieved using Atahualpa. I had to look a few things up in the forums, but answers were easily found.

Hey,

my site is nothing special and quite orange. Is it too much? http://www.2501.eu
Two questions:
1. The category menu bar has a different size in the center column than in the sidebars, how do I fix that?
2. I write about movies. Would you prefer to have a static page with big images of new movies as homepage or should i leave it as a blog.

Thanks
Chris

Paul, your short codes are showing!! Also, same deal with your pictures as before. I click on the photo of the show room and it is immense. It does not need to be that huge. Make it 800px wide max.

Right now it is 4,000+ px wide and scaled down to 1200. That is a no-no. It is also a staggering 5,981.58 KB (6,125,134 bytes). Optimize. If you don't have photoshop, download Irfanview. It is free and easy to learn.

juggledad Aug 4, 2012 01:15 PM

shocka - is your frineds site suppose to have three grey boxes at the top? The JS_wrapper is not showing for me at all.

SharonJ Aug 4, 2012 01:39 PM

Here is a screenshot. My mouse was hovered over the word Info

http://www.jacksononthemoon.com/screenshot.jpg

Also suggest you change the word info...which means essentially nothing, to Résumé or Curriculum Vitae or About Julian.

shocka Aug 4, 2012 10:04 PM

Juggledad - sharonj screen shot is correct. Is that what you see?

Sharonj thanks for the suggestion. I will pass it along.

SharonJ Aug 5, 2012 12:50 AM

Hey Shocka, the concern is that when we go to the site, it looks...sorry about this....boring.

You are doing a site for someone who does interior design. The home page should reflect that. So, the gray boxes should show a snippet of what she does.

they should actually show renderings, drawings or diagrams or even better, before and after photos of the brilliant work she does. The gray boxes don't do it for her. Also, the diagrams should have titles and alt text full of key words, since as you know, google does not see photos

cantplay Aug 14, 2012 11:07 AM

First, great thanks to all here for your participation! I am learning WP/ATA/Paint.NET/w3 content as a hobby and have this site on a local host. I have had SO many issues resolved via BFA, JD, LMW and others.

Anyway this is my site, nothing groundbreaking, but I am looking to take it to the next level, so any feedback is appreciated. I went to ata-round early on trying to jazz it up easily and now kind of wishing I didn't. I would like to jazz up the header in %logo, slick up the %pages bar, find a complimentary background (so hard!) and possibly "flatten" the page (content area not raised/shadowed) as priority items.

My Mock Site

Thanks again!

SharonJ Aug 14, 2012 12:22 PM

Hi Cantplay,

so far, so good, looks like a sports site. My first impression is that the font is too small in the content area, but then I realized that is just a screenshot, so it probably is fine once it is in a browser. Post again when the site is up and we can check around.

aviatom Aug 18, 2012 06:44 PM

here are a couple of mine, thanks to help from folks here. "learningtoflyrc.com" The navigation still needs some work (only so many spare time hours in a day). Another one "fishpondbuild.com" the pond isn't finished yet and neither is the site. comments welcome.

juggledad Aug 18, 2012 07:18 PM

aviatom - first thisn is I would suggest not making all the text centered, it is so hard to read it that way and makes me avoid sites like that. FWIW

aviatom Aug 18, 2012 08:02 PM

Align left with proper indentation would be better? What do think? Thanks Tom

nfn8 Aug 18, 2012 08:45 PM

I just spent a bunch of time redesigning my main site built on Atahualpa:

http://LinkedIntelligence.com

I'm using Juggledad's multi-post template on the home page. It took me f.o.r.e.v.e.r... to find a social sharing plugin I was happy with. I ended up with Sharexy, which I'd never heard of, but you can see the results for yourself.

I'm also using the Social Author Bio plugin, which I really like.

I kind of did some interesting CSS to make the leaderboard ad spot inside the center area instead of also above the sidebar. I could've tweaked the theme, but I'd generally rather do stuff with CSS than PHP when possible.

The main thing still left to do on it is that I want to add templates for categories, tags, and authors. P.S. - that's my #1 wish-list item to build in to Atahualpa. :-)

I really would appreciate honest feedback on it. Thanks!

F70100 Aug 26, 2012 02:39 PM

I'm new here, so first, Hello to all :)

Hope I've got the hang of this but I'm very keen to receive feedback.

I made this with this fantastic theme but only seem to be scratching the surface of what it can do.

SharonJ Aug 26, 2012 04:10 PM

Welcome FT70100

Nice page. Clean. I wonder why you have your contact form on your About Us page? Put it on its own contact page.

I would be tempted to make the body background either slightly darker or slightly lighter than the body background. But that is personal preference only.

While a realize that I am not your demographic, light text on a dark background is very hard for older or sight impaired people to read. =

BosseWeb Aug 27, 2012 10:36 AM

Please add a comment on my design based on Atahualpha.
Suggestions are very welcome! :-)

SharonJ Aug 27, 2012 12:23 PM

The fact that I don't speak Swedish should not be a problem. Your site is nice to look at, though it is very text heavy. For some reason, when I go from page to page, each page takes about 3 seconds to load. I tested it in Firefox, Chrome and IE

Why do you have categories in two places? You have the large category area under the menu and the drop-down categories on the side bar.

I would be tempted to remove the category section under the menu bar so that people would get to your content faster.

Also, make your javascript and css external by going to ATO/configure JSS and CSS (at the very bottom) and click yes to both. that might make your pages load fractionally faster.

Best wishes!
